Let’s say you’ve recently been proposed to with the perfect diamond ring – congratulations! For many people though, this will be their first time wearing such an expensive ring. You might be nervous about wearing your diamond ring in public, while others don’t know if they should keep it on while doing everyday activities, like washing dishes or sleeping. How do I keep the diamond from falling out of its setting?

Diamond are most commonly held in place by small metal prongs that hold the diamond in place. There are usually either four or six prongs per diamond ring, and though more prongs means added security, the additional prongs may block some light from getting into the diamond. When a diamond falls out of its setting, it usually means that one or more of the prongs has come loose. To prevent this from happening, we recommend that you take your diamond to a jeweler once a year to inspect the integrity of your prongs. If you notice that the diamond is loose in any way, however, you should take it to a jeweler immediately!

If we’re talking about diamond setting, let’s consider the different types and what they mean for your diamond’s security. The prong setting is the most common type, but there are plenty of other settings, such as pave or bezel. In a bezel setting, the diamond is set directly into a bezel, meaning that although you won’t get much light return, the diamond is held very securely. Another type of setting is the tension setting, where the diamond is simply held in place by the tension of the ring metal itself. As a general rule, the more points of contact that the diamond has with metal means it is more secure, but it won’t allow as much light into the diamond.

What does jewelry insurance do for me?jewelry insurance

Jewelry insurance is a must for anyone who own expensive jewelry. Generally speaking, jewelry insurance will cover you in case you lose your ring, or if it gets stolen or damaged. If you consider your diamond ring to be an investment, it’s imperative that you protect your diamond. After all, it only takes one time have your ring slip off and then it’s gone forever.

If you’re going to get your ring insured, you need a diamond expert to give you an appraisal. An appraisal document is crucial because it gives insurance companies proof that your diamond ring was worth a certain amount. If you want to file a claim for a lost of stolen diamond and you don’t have an appraisal, you may be out of luck. The time to get an appraisal is while you still have your diamond ring, not after.

I thought diamonds are indestructible, so why do I need to be careful with mine?

Diamonds may be one of the hardest materials on the planet, but they’re far from indestructible. Though diamonds are hard, that just means they are scratch-resistant. Diamonds aren’t very “tough”, which means they are prone to breaking and chipping. In fact, it’s quite common to see diamonds that have been chipped on the girdle (where the “top” and “bottom” of the diamond meet).

How can I keep my diamond safe then?

We recommend that you get your ring properly sized by a jeweler to make sure it doesn’t slip off when you don’t want it to. There are plenty of factors to consider when you get the ring sized, though. Hot environments make fingers swell, while cold environments cause fingers to shrink. If you get your ring sized while on vacation in Oahu, you might find that it’s far too loose when you’re back home in wintry Chicago. Pregnancy can also cause fingers to swell, so you can forget about getting a true fit while pregnant. Speak to your jeweler so they can consider every variable when sizing your ring.

Do I have to take off my diamond ring when I’m doing certain activities?

Most first-time diamond ring wearers are unsure about when to keep their diamond ring on or to take it off. Some people might take their rings off when washing dishes or taking a shower, because they feel the soap leaves a cloudy film on their diamond. If you’re the sort of person who misplaces things and doesn’t want to take off their ring so often, rest assured that this cloudy film of soap is purely cosmetic and won’t damage your ring in any way. If you feel that your diamond no longer has its “sparkle”, you can always clean it with a toothbrush and some water. If you plan on doing any strenuous activity though (like rock climbing) where your diamond could get hit and come loose, we suggest leaving it at home in a secure place.
